Steps Repeat was created using both 1/4" and 3/8" mild steel rod. I created the skeleton of the sculpture as a 3-step staircase. The concept began as a staircase to nowhere to speak to the frustration of progress made too slowly. I repetitiously bent and rolled a variety of shapes to create the dense surface texture. The balance of intentional pattern and spontaneous randomness hearkens back to childhood doodles and speaks to the tattooing, scarring even, of one’s personal history. Turning the staircase on its head expresses the perception of a straight, clear path, and the reality of peaks and valleys we keep hidden below. This piece is heavy, maybe 80-90 pounds, and is best maneuvered with two people. The metal is coated in a weathering oil to prevent rusting, but is meant to be an indoor piece.
